Grief, sadness, longing, sorrow and pessimism can occur for many reasons. It is a natural reaction to experience grief as a response to loss of a loved one or relationship or varying other circumstances. When we are in a healthy state our bodies, find a way of dealing with and processing these emotions. But just like when we fall and experience an injury to our muscles or break a bone, so too can a traumatic event injure the emotions. In this case grief can last for extended periods of time and in many cases can trigger bouts of depression, anxiety and panic attacks. Going a step further grief can also cause a varying array of physical symptoms whether it be physical pains, breathing issues, skin issues, digestive disturbances of varying sorts or a whole host of other issues, grief if left untreated can get quite serious.
The emotions are an area where I think acupuncture shines brilliantly in the face of (or in conjunctions with) other medical options. The basic theory of acupuncture is simple, everything vibrates. Groups of vibrations at the densest level form the bones, skin, the organs, bowels and all other physical structures. Less dense of a vibration are the varying liquids and blood that travel through the body. The most-finite level of vibration is the emotions. These vibrations are at such a finite level that they cannot be grasped yet they can have a profound impact on our physical reality.
When a practitioner inserts an acupuncture needle into a specific point, they are looking to get a reaction from the body in some way. The group of points chosen in any given treatment will elicit a harmony, a message to the body.
The difficult part for the acupuncturist is getting the correct message so that the body will take a look at not only one complaint but at a group of related complaints. Why is this important? We are so used to going to the doctor and if we have a banged up elbow getting treatment only for that elbow, but for acupuncture treatment we not only pay attention to the area of complaint, we also need to find why the body was unable to deal with this on its own. What was the path of least resistance that resulted in you having this issue or group of issues.
It is extremely important, in most cases, that you get treatment not only for your “chief complaint” but also get treatment in all of the systems that allowed that complaint to manifest, so that once you are feeling better you are less likely to have the same problems again.
With acupuncture, the idea is not for you to need treatment your whole life; the idea is that we need to train your body to deal these things itself. Patients can be fully “healed” and never have to deal with their issues again, this happens more often with physical complaints. In the realm of the emotions, it goes more like this: you are made the way you are. You are born you, and that is awesome you are great, but you are born with certain paths of least resistance and when things go awry this often leads to large boulders blocking your path, my goal is to turn these boulders into pebbles. So that when your body does experience these emotions again it can process them, and they do not linger too long and become an issue.
