Acupuncture theory explains that as we breathe the oxygen penetrates the lungs and this oxygen then gets transported to the kidneys. Once entering the kidney this energy gets further processed where it gets passed on to the blood and the rest of the organs like the Heart, Liver, Spleen then the carbon dioxide gets sent back to the lung when we exhale. The lungs and kidneys work in harmony, to maintain the necessary level of oxygen in blood. Dyspnea (shortness of breath) results when pathway between lungs and kidney is blocked, shortened or disrupted. Asthmatics do not descend the proper amount of oxygen to kidneys. When this disharmony between the lung and kidney exist acupuncture and moxibustion can be effectively employed to give the kidneys the extra boost so the breathing crisis will stop. Then further acupuncture treatment will fortify the function of the kidneys and re-establish descending function of the lungs.
Modern studies have also shown that acupuncture treatments can reduce lung inflammation and bronchospasms which can cause airway constriction.
In a randomized controlled study, 184 patients with allergic asthma received 15 sessions of acupuncture therapy over a period of 3 months, while 173 revived routine care. After three months of acupuncture treatments, asthma specific quality of life improved significantly for those receiving acupuncture treatments.
