Acupuncture for TMJ relief

This guy needs TMJ reliefAre you looking for TMJ relief? If you suffer from this disorder, you have likely experienced horrible pain along with migraines and other symptoms. The longer you go without TMJ relief, the worse these symptoms seem to get. Many doctors are unable to offer any solutions, which often triggers anxiety and panic attacks in patients dealing with TMJ pain. To make matters worse, some patients are told that their symptoms are all in their head. If anxiety predates your TMJ that could be a possibility, but we have treated a great deal of patients that have been told this despite no previous issues with anxiety prior to TMJ.

It is often reported that as time elapses, the symptoms increase and thus anxiety does as well. Some patients report they feel like they are always on an adrenaline rush. When compounded with other common symptoms such as dizziness, sleep difficulty and heart palpitations, this can create a miserable existence. Your TMJ disorder can quickly turn your life upside down and make you hardly recognize yourself anymore.

When a patient comes in seeking acupuncture to treat their TMJ, we will not only look at the reasons they are having jaw pain but will also examine which aspects of their life have changed as the result of TMJ. The treatment you receive will not only work to reduce the jaw pain but it will also address the anxiety, headaches, migraines, ear pain or any other symptom you are experiencing.

The longer you live with TMJ pain, the tighter and shorter the affected muscles get. As this happens it affects all of the surrounding muscles. What started off as tightness in the jaw can quickly cause a chain reaction on the muscles of the neck, forehead and even down to the shoulders, back and hips. This vector of tightness can cause a pathway of muscles to pull, causing simultaneous problems in multiple places. This muscle tightness will also affect the surrounding nerves, bones and can even squeeze things like the pituitary gland, which can affect the hormones and endocrine system. Adding insult to injury, with all of this pain and often emotional distress, it can often be nearly impossible to get a good night’s sleep.

How can acupuncture provide TMJ relief?

There are many different reasons why you could be experiencing TMJ pain. Through our initial consultation and diagnostic exam, we will determine the approach that will give you the most relief while also spending time addressing the other significant issues. Our goal with each treatment is for you to feel a tangible difference.

The underlying goals will be similar regardless of the course of treatment decided upon. We will alleviate the vectors of tightness both in the areas of pain as well as above and below so that we can assure optimal blood flow in and out of the area. This first step can often address both the TMJ pain and many of the other associated symptoms that were mentioned above. Throughout your acupuncture sessions we will work to resolve all issues directly and indirectly related to your TMJ pain.
